Interior Designer – Faith in Jasper Booster Article

The boy’s away. So, too, are the girls and my fantastic wife.

“Paint the room”, she says. “When we get back let’s have it ready. Then the boy can have his own room and we’ll bunk the girls together.”

Wives relax better at the cottage if the husbands that stay behind are given a project or, better still, a list of projects.

So. I am en-listed. Home Hardware and the Lumber Yard get used to my face - to my debit card, also.

It could have been an easy project, a simple task: two walls blue. But I had been enlisted to make changes, to do a little interior design work, to transform a small corner of the universe for a small boy. In short, I had an opportunity to bless my son with something special, just for him.

My wife’s expectations were not too high. My boy’s expectations were not too high - he’s only turning 6, afterall. But I love my boy. I love to create. I love to surprise. I went to town. Four cans of paint. One roll of wallpaper. Out with the old - door trim, window trim, baseboards. Out. Out. Out. (If I had the money, Alpine Carpet would have got a call.)

The days go by. My wrist gets sore: painting, sawing, staining, hammering, the verbs of preparation. Other work piles up. But it’s coming together, this place for my lad. I can’t wait to see his face!

I wonder if he misses me out at the lake? I wonder if he is tempted to think that because I am not physically present that I don’t care? I hear his small voice on the telephone. I picture him in my heart. And I remember the words of the world’s greatest Interior Designer, a carpenter Nazarene, He of the sore wrists from Calvary’s grand renovation, making the cosmos new:

“Don’t worry”, He says. “Don’t fret. Believe. Believe. Believe! In My Father. In His house. And in Me, who alone prepares you a place.”

It’s never too late to be renovated. You’re never too old to be a son or daughter.

“Behold, I make all things New!!” -the Christ
